2026 September Case Study: Capital Gains Tax Reform – Implications for Private Groups

$200.00

Chris Schoeman, Associate Director, will work through the following areas with attendees;

The recent overhaul of Australia’s capital gains tax regime represents the most significant change to the taxation of capital gains in over 25 years. With the replacement of the 50% CGT discount, the introduction of cost base indexation and a minimum tax on capital gains, Private Groups must look carefully at how assets are acquired, held and ultimately transitioned to the next generation.

This session will explore the practical implications of the new regime and the strategic considerations for private groups, family offices and business owners moving forward.

Topics covered include:

  • Overview of the new CGT regime and how the calculation of capital gains has fundamentally changed.
  • Grandfathering rules and the treatment of gains accrued before 1 July 2027.
  • Transitional arrangements, including market value resets, valuation requirements and apportionment methodologies.
  • The new residential property exemption and circumstances where investors can continue to access the traditional 50% CGT discount.
  • The taxation of pre-CGT assets and the end of the historic exemption for future gains.
  • Whether traditional discretionary trust structures remain attractive under the new regime.
  • The changing role of companies, bucket companies and corporate investment vehicles in private group structuring.

Join Chris Schoeman as he unpacks the changes and how they would impact on the way you structure your private group clients going forward.
