Main Residence Exemption – Navigating the Complexities

The family home can be the most valuable asset for some clients. It is vital that the tax free status of this asset is preserved to the greatest extent possible, however the Main Residence Exemption rules can become very complex, very quickly. It is therefore important to know where the traps and limitations of the rules are, as well the opportunities.

In our next training session, Sean Pearce and Gaurav Chitnis will be taking an in-depth look at these rules and provide practical guidance on how to manage and plan for the Main Residence Exemption.

The topics we will cover will include:

  • The basic rules and partial exemption;
  • The temporary absence and ‘first used to produce income’ rules;
  • Subdivision and development issues;
  • Inheriting a main residence; and
  • Non-residents with main residences

Our session will also include a Case Study applying the Main Residence rules to practical situations.
